A community tapestry

Are you more a maker than a talker? Are you a visual communicator? Would you prefer to channel your creativity energies outside the limelight? Perhaps you just have some hilarious/inspirational/educational artifacts (digital or analog) around that you think should be part of the N&N cultural tapestry.

Well, this is your lucky day! Threads aren’t just about giving talks and occupying center stage—there are other ways to help create the fabric of our society!

A literal community tapestry

Inspired by friends who invited guests to contribute pieces for a wedding quilt (like the one at left, used as the huppah in the Jewish ceremony), we invite you to help us piece together a visual representation of our community.

To adapt this tradition to our guests’ presumed constraints of time and textile-wrangling talents, we will construct a paper-based tapestry together on-site during the wedding weekend. To cater to our interest in hexagonal tesselation, we will use hexagonal tapestry pieces (see below for dimensions).

Join our community! Make us a hexagon!

We invite you to create a hexagon tile for the N&N tapestry—where the word create and its associated terms creative and creativity are the operative words. If you‘d like a bit more guidance, we suggest that your hexagon:

  • represent YOU, in whatever way you’d like
  • express (perhaps schematically) what YOU bring to our community
  • express (perhaps schematically) your most salient connections to N&N

In other words, it’s all about YOU!

  • Our default size will be a hexagon that can fit on a letter-sized page. Please see this sample template for the precise dimensions. Note that you may also start with a square or any other shape, as long as it fits into your default hexagon.
  • You can make several hexagons, or one creation spanning multiple hexagons!
  • You can print out a physical hexagon and bring it to the wedding or you can make it on-site. Click the button below if you want to let us know what's coming.
  • If you can't make it to the NNWW, you can submit a PDF of something that fits in the template, also by clicking the button below. PDFs should be submitted by June 1 if you want them to appear in the tapestry.
  • Please let us know that you are planning to contribute a hexagon by clicking the button below.

Loose threads

(AKA everything else: other digital or analog artifacts, virtual or tangible)

Do you have any hilarious photos or embarrassing videos you can dig up; a recipe, book, poem or quotation you think N&N would or should particularly appreciate? A puzzle you‘d like to construct, game to share, other non-hexagonal, non-tapestry-based artwork to display? Are you looking for an excuse to engage in wanton craftiness? We welcome all these loose threads too!
